Renewing License Discs In South Africa

Check the expiry date of your licence disk, RSA 2024/05/03 on display.

Check Expiry Date

Your vehicle’s license disc is valid for 12 months.

Check the expiry date printed on the disc (usually bottom-right).

You must renew before the expiry month ends, or penalties will apply.

Documents required to renew license disk, vehicle registration certificate, application form and ID.

Documents You’ll Need

ID document (original or certified copy).

Proof of residence (utility bill, lease, Bank statement etc.).

Completed ALV Form (Application for Motor Vehicle License – available at traffic department, post office, or online).

Outstanding traffic fines must be paid before renewal.

Where to Renew

Post Office (most branches offer renewals).

Local Traffic Department / Licensing Office.

Online Services (some provinces allow e-services or third-party providers like FNB, PayCity, etc.).

Pay Renewal Fees

Fees depend on the vehicle type, weight, and province.

Passenger vehicles (small cars) cost less than heavy commercial vehicles.

The teller or online system will calculate and tell you the exact amount.

Receive New License Disc

If renewing in person: you’ll get your disc immediately.

If renewing online: it’s usually delivered to your address or collected at a branch, depending on the service provider.

Avoid Penalties

If you miss the deadline, you’ll pay an extra 10% per month late fee, plus possible fines if caught driving with an expired disc.
