Step-by-Step Application Process

Locate a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Office:

Find the nearest DHA branch that provides ID services.

Book an Appointment (if available):

Many branches offer online or call-in appointments to reduce waiting times.

Prepare Your Documents:

Ensure all original documents and copies are ready.

Include a police report for lost or stolen IDs.

Visit the DHA Office:

Arrive early and follow the office’s instructions.

Fill in the required forms for the type of application (first-time, replacement, upgrade, correction).

Provide Biometric Data:

DHA captures fingerprints, a photograph, and sometimes a signature for the smart ID card.

Pay Applicable Fees:

Fees for first-time IDs are usually R140 for smart ID cards.

Replacement or correction fees may also be around R140–R160, depending on the service.

Fees are payable at the DHA office.

Receive Your Receipt:

This receipt contains your reference number, which is used to track your application.

Wait for Processing:

Smart ID cards are typically available within 4–6 weeks.

First-time green/brown ID books may take longer if still issued in rare cases.

Collect Your ID:

Return to the DHA office with your receipt to collect your ID.

Some offices offer courier delivery for smart ID cards for an additional fee.
