How To Get Your International Driver's Permit In South Africa

1.
What is an IDP?
An International Driver’s Permit is a legal document that translates your South African driver’s licence into multiple languages, allowing you to drive in most countries abroad. It must always be carried with your original SA licence.

2.
Where to Apply
AA South Africa (Automobile Association) – the only authorised issuer in SA.
Apply at an AA Accredited Sales Agent (most major towns/cities have branches).

3.
Requirements
You’ll need:
A valid South African driver’s licence (card type).
Your green barcoded ID book or smart ID card (or a valid passport).
Two passport-sized photographs (most AA branches can take them for you).
The application form (completed at AA or downloaded online).
The application fee (about R300 – R400 depending on branch).

4.
Processing Time & Validity
Usually issued immediately over the counter if all documents are correct.
Validity
An IDP is valid for 1 year from the date of issue.
Important Notes
You must carry your original SA driver’s license with the IDP when driving abroad.
Some countries (like the USA) don’t legally require it but car rental companies often do.
You can choose between different IDP types (based on the country you are visiting) – the AA staff will help you select the right one.
