E-tags & tollgates In South Africa

1.
What is an e-tag?
An e-tag is an electronic device that allows automatic payment of tolls on South African highways. It links to your account and vehicle, letting you drive through toll gates without stopping.

2.
Choose a Toll Operator
South Africa has multiple toll operators, e.g.:
SANRAL (major highways nationwide)
N3 Toll Concession (N3TC)
Bakwena (N1 and N4 routes)
Each operator has its own e-tag system, but most are interoperable on major routes.

3.
Register and Get an e-Tag
Visit the toll operator’s website or service centre.
Provide:
Vehicle registration number
Driver or owner details
Payment method (bank account or credit card)
Receive your e-tag device, usually a small sticker or transponder.
4.
Install the e-Tag
Stick or mount the e-tag on your windshield as instructed.
Make sure it is clean and visible for the toll gate sensors.

5.
Top-Up / Maintain Balance
Your account must have enough funds to cover tolls.
Options for topping up:
Online via website or app
Bank EFT or debit order
At customer service centres

6.
Using the Toll Roads
Drive through the e-tag lane at toll plazas.
The system automatically deducts the toll fee from your account.
Avoid using the e-tag lane without a tag, as this can result in fines or violation notices.
7.
Check Your Account
Monitor usage and balances online.
Correct vehicle details and number plate must match the e-tag registration.
Tips:
Keep your e-tag clean and unobstructed.
Multiple vehicles require separate e-tags unless the operator allows linked accounts.
If you cross tolls without a tag, pay the toll online within a set period to avoid fines.
